OUTSIDE IN
This installation was designed in conjunction with Dallas Hartwig’s photo exhibition, OUTSIDE IN, as an exploration of perception, introspection, and the contrast between external appearances and internal truths.
The sculpture invites interaction, challenging viewers to engage with it on a deeper level. Scattered across its surface, small “peep holes” offer glimpses inward—some easily accessible, others placed in inconvenient or uncomfortable positions. To see inside requires effort, curiosity, and sometimes even discomfort. But once you peer in, the sensory experience shifts. The outside world dissolves, replaced by the scents and textures of nature—juniper, cedar, tumbleweed, dried florals, and wildflowers—immersing the viewer in a visceral connection to the Outside.
Through this piece, I wanted to reflect on a fundamental truth about humanity: we are often preoccupied with our exterior, caught in the illusion of surface beauty, perfection, and image. We focus on how we appear to the world, yet the true essence of who we are lies within. And just like the act of looking inward, it can be uncomfortable. It demands vulnerability, self-reflection, and a willingness to see past the superficial.
But it is inside where the real magic exists. Beauty, authenticity, and transformation are cultivated in the unseen spaces, in the quiet moments of introspection. This installation is an invitation—to not just observe but to experience, to push beyond what is easy or obvious, and to discover the richness that lies beneath.
